INNER GAMES

BASKETBALL OUR WAY MEANS WINNING THE INNER GAMES FIRST.
IF WE WIN THESE FOUR GAMES,
THE SCOREBOARD WILL TAKE CARE OF ITSELF.

COMPARISON GAME

The real measure of me is not what I do in comparison to others, but what I do in comparison to my own Best Self. To focus on the scoreboard is to focus on the opponent, whom we have no control over, and setting ourselves up for failure. Winning by our definition requires focusing our energy and thoughts on something we have total control over - the quality of our effort and preparation. Galatians 6:4 says, "Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves, without comparing to someone else."

CONFIDENCE GAME

Much of what is seen as confidence in sports today is fake confidence. Putting down others (opponents or teammates) or flaunting a made shot or made play is the result of a weak self-image, low self-esteem and personal doubt. True confidence is a game-changer and the key is actually in building others up and encouraging them. When we build each other up, we feel better about ourselves, which brings out our best more often. When those around us do well, we notice it, appreciate it and affirm them with energy and excitement. When those around us struggle, we encourage them. The result is a true rock solid confidence in ourselves and each other that elevates our performance to its highest levels.

CHALLENGE GAME

People often approach challenges and competitions with thoughts such as, "How good are they?" "I hope we can win." "I hope we're good enough." "I hope I don't screw up." These are the thought processes of someone who lacks belief and has probably already lost before the game begins. Our thoughts must be, "Let's see how good we (or I) can be!" The excitement of discovering our potential gives us extra effort and brings out our best. The bigger the challenge, the more exciting the opportunity because we're not afraid to lose.

CARING GAME

How much do you care? What do you care about? The answer to these questions is critical to our (and your) success. Most of the time, the team that is the most successful is the team that truly cares the most - that has invested more of themselves. In addition, much of sports in our culture is dominated by a "What's in it for me?" or "What do I get out of it?" approach. Winning the Caring Game is understanding that "It's not about me - It's about TEAM." Winning the Caring Game creates synergy - the whole is greater than the sum of the parts - and gives us true JOY in the experience.
